LA CROSSE, WI (WXOW) - A cell phone helped police track down an intoxicated male by the river over the weekend. La Crosse police found him after the man called 911 claiming he was lost and confused.
Just before 6:00 Saturday morning dispatchers were able to contact the cell phone service provider. The cell phone company activated a phone's GPS feature.
That helped determine the 21-year-old male was on the south side of La Crosse near Marco drive. Police found the man wet and covered in mud, indicating he had been in the river.
Bob Berndt of the La Crosse Police Department says, "The man wandered down to the river. He recalled seeing a barge. He walked through the marsh and had been in the water by Isle la Plume."
The man was given a public intoxication warning after his blood alcohol level registered at nearly twice the legal limit to drive.
