La Crosse, WI (WXOW)- The La Crosse Police Department and Wisconsin DNR fatally shot a bear at Myrick Park shortly before 11am on Saturday.
Three police officers and a Wisconsin DNR warden took the bear down when it climbed up into a tree on the northwest corner of the park.
Sergeant Smith with the La Crosse Police Department says the male black bear had first been spotted on Vine Street.
Smith says public safety was a big concern.
DNR official Mark Burmesch says the Wisconsin DNR don't commonly have tranquilizers or darts.
Residents who say the bear say the decision to shoot the bear is upsetting.
Wisconsin DNR says the bear population has been increasing over the last few years in our area.
