SE Iowa town looks into selling bridge

Associated Press - July 15, 2009 5:34 AM ET

KEOKUK, Iowa (AP) - Officials in a southeastern Iowa town are looking into selling an old railroad bridge.

Keokuk officials say they are contacting several organizations to gauge interest in the bridge, which connects the town to Hamilton, Ill.

Keokuk mayor Dave Gudgel says the only company that still uses the bridge is Peoria, Ill.-based Pioneer Railcorp.

Gudgel says Pioneer has expressed interest in buying the bridge, since it currently pays fees to the city of Keokuk to use it.

Keokuk spends at least $500,000 annually on bridge maintenance. Officials say those costs were closer to $1.2 million in 2008, partly because of damage caused during flooding last summer.
