According to Sheriff Gene Cary, the bus, with flashing lights, was stopped to pick up students along Highway 14 near Cemetery Road south of Readstown about 7:10am. During the stop, the SUV, driven by a 51-year-old Brian Starkey of Crawford County, crashed into the rear of the bus.
Vernon County Coroner Janet Reed pronounced Starkey dead at the scene.
Nine students aboard the bus, ages 4 to 15, were not injured.
The bus is operated by the Kickapoo School District.
