LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) - Safety is important keep in mind as all the trick-or-treaters head out to collect their goodies. The La Crosse Police Department offers these tips for children and their parents.
First, the hours for trick-or-treating on Saturday are from 4pm until 8pm. People wanting to offer treats to children should keep their outdoor lights on during that time.
Trick-or-treaters should stay within the neighborhood and visit homes they know.
Young children should be accompanied by a parent or older, responsible person.
While children should watch for traffic, drivers also should be on constant lookout for children. "The kids are gonna be more excited than usual out in their costume and sometimes have limited visibility," says Sgt. Kirk Flatten of the La Crosse Police Department. "So I ask the drivers in the the City of La Crosse and La Crosse County to pay extra attention when they are out and about."
Children should carry a flashlight and wear clothing that they won't trip on. Adding reflective tape to a costume can help make trick-or-treaters more visible to drivers.
Lastly, all treats should be examined before eating anything.
