RED WING, Minn. (AP) -- Minnesota-based boot maker Red Wing Shoes says it will lay off about 200 workers in Kentucky and Minnesota due to soaring unemployment among blue collar workers -- the company's core market.
The company says Friday that it will close a manufacturing facility in Kentucky and will shut down the second shift at the Red Wing plant. Sixty layoffs will be in Minnesota, the rest will be at the Danville, Ky., plant.
The company expects to make the same amount of footwear with two facilities at full capacity as it did with three plants running at about 70 percent. However, costs should drop significantly.
The plant in Potosi, Mo., is expected to add employees to handle the higher work load.
