UPDATE: Police investigating prisoner walk away from Stanley Prison

Stanley (WQOW) – Investigators aren't saying much about the two prisoners who were able to walk away from the Stanley Prison with fake documents.

Stanley Police Chief Roy Fredrickson says two inmates walked away from the Stanley Correctional Institute in January.  He says both inmates used fake papers to get their release.

No information is being released about the inmates at this time, but Tony Streveler with the Department of Corrections says there was no danger to the public.  He says both inmates were on active supervision and were checking in with a probation agent.  Fredrickson says the two were taken back into custody in the Milwaukee area without incident.

Streveler says no information is being released on the origin, quality or how the inmates got the documents.

The use of fake documents to get release is nothing new.  Streveler says there have always been attempts to make fake documents, but he isn't aware of any other instances where the use of them has been successful.

An investigation into the matter is being done by the Stanley Police Department and the DOC.  Fredrickson says he hopes to have it wrapped up in a few weeks.
