ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - A stealth play by backers of slot machines at Minnesota race tracks has given their bill a pulse in the Legislature.
Democratic Rep. Al Juhnke (JUNK'-ee) attached his racino bill to another measure that won approval from the House Agriculture, Rural Economies and Veterans Affairs Committee. Juhnke is the panel's chairman and the bill passed on a divided voice vote Wednesday.
The bill heads to a bigger House committee, where it faces longer odds. The plan is stalled in the Senate.
Juhnke says discussion should continue on a plan supporters say will generate tens of millions of dollars for the state. Proceeds could also help finance a new Minnesota Vikings stadium.
Legislation to allow slot machines at Minnesota horse tracks has been circulating at the Capitol for 13 years.
