(WXOW)- The fish were biting the bait out at Pettibone on Friday morning.
The physical education teacher from North Woods Elementary took students fishing.
For some students, it was the first time.
A $1,000 grant from the La Crosse Public Education Foundation allowed the school to purchase fishing equipment like bait and fishing rods.
"A lot of first timers today. It's the first time they've grabbed a worm and tried to put it on a hook. We've been catching a lot of blue gills and the bass are spawning in the shallow so they're chasing around and splashing and having a great time," said Physical Educator Nick O'Keefe.
"I think it's quite fun fishing just the experience and stuff cause a lot of people might not have money to fish, but here we're not paying for it which is kind of cool," said 11 year-old Chloe Cleven.
This is the first time the school has taken students fishing.
