LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW)-- Like them or not, security cameras are growing in popularity. Whether it be at the gas station, in a bank, or even at a restaurant, there are most likely are surveillance cameras watching.

"Almost anywhere you go these days you are going to find cameras watching and helping protect you," said Pete Stussy, a security consultant from Par Mar.

These cameras have helped catch employees pocketing money, have identified shoplifters, and this week, surveillance video helped locate the suspect involved in a series of robberies.

It took only one day for police to identify and arrest the suspect in Tuesdays' bank robbery in La Crosse.

Police say security cameras captured 53-year old Jeffery Haydock getting into a pickup truck moments after the robbery.

"The video from the public library was in fact key in the arrest. It captured the suspects vehicle, prior to and after the robbery," said La Crosse Captain Michael Brohmer.

Along with helping identify criminals, some businesses choose to install a unit to ease concern.

"Some customers are concerns with employees taking money out of their registers. Some just want to keep a record of what is going on around their property, so surveillance cameras can help,'' said Stussy.

These cameras serve a purpose; they are to help local businesses minimize loss when it come to money and also for safety.

"It is for the best interest of the store and the best interest of the community as well in lots of cases," said Stussy.

While some people may feel uncomfortable with the fact that cameras are most often watching.

Security systems are in place for public safety, to document daily activity, and to be a deterrent to criminals.
