LA CRESCENT, Minnesota (WXOW) -- The Seven Rivers Sudden Cardiac Arrest Association presented the Church of the Crucifixion in La Crescent with an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) on Wednesday.
The AED is an easy to use, portable device designed to give a life saving shock to the heart.
According to the SCAA, if a cardiac arrest victim is defibrillated within the first minute of collapse, their chance for survival is close to 90%.
If more than 10 minutes pass before defibrillation, the chance of survival drops to less than 5%.
Through fundraisers, the SCAA has been able to donate three AED's locally in the past two years as well as nine units to the La Crosse County Sheriff Department.
Wednesday marks the start of National CPR and AED Awareness Week, which runs June 1st-7th.
