CHICAGO (AP) - Katherine Plouffe scored 14 points as fifth-seeded Marquette beat No. 4 seed Villanova 56-53 in the quarterfinals of the women's Big East Conference tournament yesterday. Marquette avenged two regular season losses to Villanova. The Golden Eagles will play top-seeded DePaul today in the semifinals.
MESA, Ariz. (AP) - Justin Ruggiano went 3 for 3 with a two-run homer and three RBIs as the Chicago Cubs outlasted a Milwaukee Brewers split squad 10-8 yesterday. Brewers slugger Ryan Braun was 1 for 2 with a double. Tyler Thornburg gave up the home run to Ruggiano but then settled down and blanked the Cubs for the next three innings.
GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) - Josh Tomlin struck out five in four scoreless innings to help the Cleveland Indians beat a Milwaukee Brewers split squad 4-2 yesterday. Tomlin struck out the side in his last inning. Brewers starter Wily Peralta struggled with his control. He gave up three runs and four hits in 3 1-3 innings.
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) - Sam Shields has agreed to re-sign with the Packers. That keeps one of the top free-agent cornerbacks this offseason off the market. The four-year NFL veteran agreed to a four-year, $39 million deal with a $12.5 million signing bonus. Shields has emerged to combine with Tramon Williams to provide a solid corner tandem in Green Bay.
