Car Fire on I-90

Sparta, Wisconsin (WXOW)-A van fire backed up traffic near Sparta on Interstate 90.

Both lanes of westbound traffic near mile marker 21 were closed around 3:30 PM this afternoon when a Volkswagen bus's engine caught fire.

La Crosse, Bangor, and Sparta fire departments were called to help with putting out the fire, which took about 20 minutes to put out.

The Wisconsin state patrol has now reopened both lanes of traffic.

The car was fully engulfed in flames and is a total loss.

The driver of the car was not injured and was not in the car when fire crews arrived on the scene. He was traveling from Tomah to Sparta when the car lost power and engine started on fire.

The cause of the fire was fuel related.
