An update on a story we first reported more than a year ago.
You may recall in May 2007 the La Crosse Mayor Mark Johnsrud announced he wanted to look into a city ambulance service that would be staffed by city firefighters.
At the time Fire Chief Gregg Cleveland said the fire department could be a strong asset in emergency services. Tri-state responded by saying they have a high performance track both clinically and financially.
By July representatives from the city including both hospitals and the Tri-State Ambulance, service owned by gundersen lutheran, met to discuss the plan.
The next day the city council voted to approve mediation among the parties.
About the first of this year county board chairman Steve Doyle assumed the mediator role. He says that all parties agreed to his service. According to Doyle no agreement has been reached. He says the city and county are working to get a firm grip on what the financial numbers would look like.
Doyle says the mayor is set to introduce a proposed ordinance to the city council in September.
Before anything is proposed Doyle says he wants to see some kind of public input.
