Firefighters visit Emerson Elementary

La Crosse, WI (WXOW) - As part of National Emergency Services Week the La Crosse Fire Department is touring local schools in the community to bring them a message about emergencies and safety.

The firefighters walked into Emerson Elementary school May 19th to teach the students about 911 and preventative safety.  Their presentation featured a movie and a game called Stump the Firefighters.  This game showed the first graders what EMS responders do in the community.

"They're highly spirited; they get very involved in playing some of the games.  I think that energy itself is enough to keep that message in the kids mind," said Jeff Schott of the La Crosse Fire Department.

A message that was well received.

"If you see someone on the ground, like if someone is injured, you just go on a phone and call 911," explained first grader Zach Slevin.

Anticipation soared for the highlight of the lesson.  The kids ventured outside and get a close up view of the fire truck.  They also watched demonstrations on the powerful equipment.

"We bring the fire truck because the kids obviously like to see the fire truck and the rescue equipment on it.  But it also leaves a lasting impression in their minds that firefighters are not only there for fires, but also on EMR and that we are there to help them no matter what the problem is," says Schott.

There was one more bonus to the big day.

"I got to meet 6 awesome firemen," said Zach.

The firefighters will be visiting 14 different schools the week of May 19th.  By the end of the week, 550 first graders will see their presentation.
