Lack of money closes Catholic school in Racine

Associated Press - May 27, 2009 12:25 PM ET

RACINE, Wis. (AP) - An independent Catholic middle school that serves poor families is closing because it lacks money.

The board of directors announced Tuesday that San Juan Diego Middle School in Racine will close in June.

Executive Director Laura Sumner Coon says the school didn't have enough donations coming in and couldn't get enough credit.

The Catholic school opened in 2003 to serve students who couldn't afford a private education. It is not affiliated with a parish.

Sumner Coon says donors have given about $4.5 million in the past six years. But she says staff have worked a month without pay, and school officials weren't sure they could raise enough money for the next school year.

The school has about 70 students in fifth through eighth grade.
