ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Gov. Tim Pawlenty entered office battling a mammoth budget deficit. An economic report due Wednesday determines whether he'll spend his final year coping with one, too. All signs pointed to another shortfall that will need fixing before this budget cycle concludes in June 2011. The economic forecast also was to provide an early look at tax and spending patterns for the 2012-13 budget period.
A forecast showing a deficit would give Pawlenty grounds to make budget cuts on his own. But he has said he wants to involve the Legislature in crafting a solution. The 2010 session begins in February and another forecast will be released a month later.
9 of the 13 twice-yearly forecasts done since Pawlenty became governor have shown deficits.
