LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) - Testimony from one of the investigating officers lays out what happened that led to the overdose death of a La Crosse woman.

In La Crosse County Circuit Court Thursday morning, LCPD Investigator Matt Malott testified in the preliminary hearing of Mitchell Perner and Cory Koopman.  They are charged with providing the drugs that killed 20-year-old Shelby Perkins in May.

Malott told the court that Perner supplied heroin to Perkins after she called him from work and told him she was "dope sick" and needing drugs.  Later that evening, he went back out and got more of the drug for Perkins.

Both times he purchased the drugs from co-defendant Cory Koopman.

When Perner and Perkins returned home, she again used heroin.  She later came into the bedroom where he was sleeping.  Perner told Malott that Perkins then passed out and he called for help.

A forensic pathologist also testified that Perkins had a fatal level of heroin in her blood.

The hearing was continued until August 4th to allow defense attorneys to further study the autopsy reports.
