LA CROSSE, WISCONSIN (WXOW) - The Christmas spirit was in the air at the Salvation Army in La Crosse today.
Volunteers helped with the annual Christmas food basket distribution. The Salvation Army handed out complete turkey dinners to around 350 families this year. Major Curtiss Hartley says that while the recipients are grateful, the volunteers also receive something, too. Hartley says, "They're actually having a good time. They really enjoy that tangible way of actually helping somebody materially, putting food into a box for somebody, knowing that that means the family's going to be sitting around a table enjoying a really nice Christmas dinner."
Each dinner comes with a turkey or chicken, stuffing, vegetables, and all the trimmings. Hartley says while this is the only day they do this, the Salvation Army does provide to the community the rest of the year through their food pantry and meal programs. He adds that he's grateful for this very giving community to help make this possible.
