Fifth freedom honor flight takes off for D.C.

LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW)-- More than 100 veterans from the area made the trip to Washington D.C. to visit war memorials.

The fifth Freedom Honor Flight took off this morning.

Veterans spend the day in D.C. and return in the evening.

Many of the veterans are well over 80 years old and have never seen the war memorials.

Kwik Trip sponsors the flight so the veterans can fly free.

Charles Ira from Spillville, Iowa says, "It makes me happy to see all the old guys. Actually, they're strangers. But it's wonderful, really great."

More than 350 World War II veterans are still on the waiting list to go to Washington D.C.
