LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) - UPDATE - The La Crosse County Sheriff reveals more about the events surrounding the May murder of a Barre Mills couple by their son.
Sheriff Steve Helgeson, La Crosse County District Attorney Tim Gruenke, and Wisconsin Attorney General J. B. Van Hollen spoke at a news conference Friday morning. This is one day after the arrest of Dennis and Merna Koula's son, Eric Koula, on two counts of First Degree Intentional Homicide.
Helgeson says they believe Eric went to his parent's Barre Mills home around 530pm. He shot his mother while she sat at her computer shortly after that. Eric Koula waited until around 6pm, and when his father came home, shot him.
Three days later, on May 24th, Eric called authorities after going to the home. He told investigators he hadn't heard from his parents for several days and went to check on them after his mother failed to show up for a teaching job in West Salem.
Financial gain was the motive for the crime. In their wills, the Koula's left their estate to Eric Koula and his sister.
No one at the news conference would say how long they suspected Koula for the murders or what evidence was found linking him to the crime. More details are expected to be revealed when the criminal complaint is filed in court Friday afternoon.
District Attorney Tim Gruenke says Koula will be formally charged Friday afternoon with the two homicide counts and one count of forgery.
We will have updates on wxow.com on this developing story. There will also be more information tonight on Live at Five, the 6pm and 10pm Reports.
