New Community Garden announced

LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) - People in one La Crosse neighborhood who enjoy vegetable gardening, but lack the space in their own yards now have another option.

A community garden is now in place by a vacant lot on the Franciscan Skemp Campus, thanks to the Washburn Neighborhood Association and Franciscan Skemp.

Neighborhood residents and Franciscan Skemp employees can rent a 240-square foot plot to manage as their own. Some of the produce goes to local food pantries.

Mike Brown, Director, Spiritual Care,  "The Washburn Neighborhood Association has found that it is a place where people and some of the neighbors can get together and get to know each other.  So some relationships have formed that weren't there before.  People are out and about and planting things, and harvesting that, and talking to their neighbors.  So for them it's been great."

This year 21 plots were available in the garden.  Next year 20 more plots will be added -- and a children's pumpkin patch is on the agenda.
