La Crosse, WI (WXOW) - A local funeral director says cremation services are becoming more and more popular, and one of the main reasons is our struggling economy. The cremation association of North America says that, nationally, cremation is used for about 38% of funeral services.
In 2009 cremation was used in 40% of Wisconsin funerals. Compared to a traditional service, the price is quite a bit lower, roughly a quarter of the cost.
La Crosse funeral director Joseph Schams says, "cremation at one time, as being something that was looked down on, now it's almost half of the dispositions in our state, which they still predict to rise. So cremation is a popular choice for many reasons."
Schams also says that cremation is environmentally friendly and it can offers the family more time to arrange the funeral.
