Text Alerts: How do they work?

Mobile Text Alerts (SMS Alerts) from WXOW fall into six main groups:

Breaking News Alerts: These are sent from the WXOW Newsroom at the discretion of the news staff when a story or event is of significant interest or has a significant impact on our audience as a whole.  Sign up for these alerts.

Daily Forecast Alerts: These alerts are sent out each morning at roughly 7:00 a.m. and include a short updated forecast.  These alerts are created and sent by a member of the Weather team. Sign up for these alerts.

Programming Alerts: These alerts will be sent when an unplanned change is made to regular television programming on WXOW.  Alerts may also be sent to announce moments of significance in network programming.  The purpose of these alerts is to help keep subscribers informed of changes that may impact their planned viewing or recording of television programs. Sign up for these alerts.

Severe Weather Alerts: These alerts are sent from an automated system to ensure the fastest possible delivery once the National Weather Service issues the weather alert.  Subscribers have the option to choose from several different alert types, including Tornado Warnings, Tornado Watches, Severe Thunderstorm Warnings, Severe Thunderstorm Watches, Winter Storm Warnings, Ice Storm Warnings, Heavy Snow Warnings and High Wind Warnings.  Subscribers can choose as many or as few of these alert types as they wish.  Subscribers also have the option to choose the counties within the WXOW viewing area for which they want to receive the alerts.  Again, subscribers may choose as many or as few counties as they wish. Sign up for these alerts.

School Closings Alerts: These alerts are sent from an automated system to ensure timely delivery of closing, cancellation, and delay information.  Various schools, colleges, school-affiliated child care facilities, and other organizations have registered accounts which they use to notify WXOW of changes to their regular schedules.  These changes are most often due to inclement weather but may be enacted because of any number of causes.  When the notice is entered into WXOW's system a text alert is sent to subscribers who have chosen to receive alerts related to that school or organization.  In the event that a change or update is made to the school or organization's schedule change information, a new alert will be sent.  Subscribers may select as many or as few schools and organizations as they wish.  If you represent a school or organization that is not included in the list, please contact Internet Director Kevin Millard at kmillard@wxow.com to request an evaluation. Sign up for these alerts.

WXOW Mobile Rewards Club: Up to four times each month WXOW will send text alerts to members of the Mobile Rewards Club (MRC).  These alerts may include, but are not limited to: invitations to participate in a contest, a special discount or offer from a partner business or organization, an invitation to attend an event, an invitation to join a local mobile club.  WXOW prides itself on respecting the personal relationship many of our subscribers have with their mobile phones.  We make significant efforts to ensure that the messages you receive are likely to have value to you. While not every message will be of interest to every subscriber, we aim to offer a mix of attractive offers and valuable information, all while having some fun! Sign up for these alerts.
