Custodians hard at work with Back To School List

LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW)-- Only one month left until school is back in session and custodians say they are hard at work with their back to school list school.

Many classrooms are empty, yet custodians are busy prepping and perfecting.

"This is the busiest time for us, " said Paul Zabel has worked in La Crosse School District for 18 years.

Paul's right hand man, Tim Kendhammer, is a man of all trades.

Tim is starting his 39th year on the job and both say teamwork, attention to detail and having fun create perfection.

"We clean every chair, desk, window, hallway, classroom, shampoo every classroom's carpet, strip the floors, and refinish and wax them," said Zabel.

"We have 17 classrooms and also have to update the Library, the gym, the cafeteria, and the hallways," said Kendhammer.

The custodians even personalize some of the rooms.

They say Mrs. Fitzgerald is the "glitter queen," so they added glitter to the wax in her room.

"I can't wait to see what the kids think when they see the glitter in Mrs. Fitzgerald's room," said Zabel.

Whether it be glitter or a freshly finished floor, the custodians say their favorite part of the year is the first day of school because every chair, desk, hallway, floor, and classroom will be clean with the hopes of giving students and teachers a fresh start.
