LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) - Before searchers even arrived Tuesday morning at Pettibone Park, family members of Junior Thao walked the shoreline looking for signs of the missing child.
Thao was swimming with family Monday afternoon at the north end of Pettibone Park when he disappeared.
Koua Thao, Junior's older brother, says he was last seen in the water around 3pm when he went under. Two people tried to swim out to him, but he was not found.
Searchers spent several hours searching the waters of the Mississippi, and on land, but didn't find any sign of the 6-year-old.
Thao says the family is 'really sad' at what has happened. They held a ceremony in the 'hope that calling the spirit will find him'.
"Junior is a nice kid, a loving kid," says Koua Thao. "He had lots of friends at school, enjoyed playing and meeting new friends and liked to play video games."
Around 15 family members are joining the search along with police, fire, and dive rescue team members.
