Shilling giving victory speech Tuesday night in La Crosse
LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) -- Democrat Jennifer Shilling has defeated Republican Sen. Dan Kapanke of La Crosse in one of only two wins for Democrats in six recall elections targeting Republican incumbents.
She is the first Democrat to win on Tuesday, with four Republicans holding on to their seats. The other Democratic victory was in the 18th Senate District, where Jessica King beat Sen. Randy Hopper.
Both wins weren't enough to give Democrats control of the Senate.
Unofficial results show Shilling captured 55 percent of the vote compared with 45 percent for Kapanke.
Kapanke has been in the Senate since 2004. Shilling was first elected to the state Assembly in 2000.
