Galesville, WISCONSIN (WXOW) – Visit the town of Galesville and you'd be hard-pressed to find a more storied structure than the Old Main Historical and Community Arts Center.

"If the walls could talk, it would be an interesting conversation," said Gary Olson, one of the center's volunteers.

The building was constructed in 1862 and has served as everything from a college to a Catholic retreat center since it was erected.

It's been inhabited by four different religious groups, and Gale College, which was open from 1862 to 1939, boasted some famous alumni and instructors during its peak years.

One of them was a famed character from the Civil War.

"Johnny Clem was a young boy who was too young to serve in the military," Olson said. "But he became a drummer boy, and later, Johnny Clem taught military tactics in the auditorium on the third floor of this building."
