Vernon County adds K-9 unit

VIROQUA, Wisconsin (WXOW) - The Vernon County Sheriff's Office is adding its first full time K-9 to their force.

Sheriff Jon Spears says that the $20,000 needed to cover costs associated with getting, training, and equipping a dog was raised surprisingly quickly.

"I was confident we would have the support, but did not expect the goal for the first K-9 to be met so quickly," said Spears.

Besides donations from the community, Vernon Memorial Healthcare contributed $10,000 once the first $10,000 was raised according to Spears.

"Larz" is an 18-month-old German Shepard from Santiago, Chile, who is already undergoing training. He'll be handled by Deputy Sheriff Brian James.

Spears says they are continuing to take donations in order to get a second K-9 for the department.
