Lake City Officer remains critical; suspect shot self

LAKE CITY, Minnesota (WXOW) - As of Tuesday afternoon, the officer who was shot while responding to a call remains in critical condition in a Rochester hospital.

According to a release from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, Officer Shawn Schneider, 32, was shot as he responded to a domestic incident at a home in Lake City around 840am Monday.

Following the shooting, the suspect went back inside the home at 618 West Lyon Avenue.  Officers entered the home and found the suspect, identified as Alan John Sylte, Jr., 25, of Hager City, Wisconsin, dead.

The Mayo Clinic Medical Examiner, in a preliminary autopsy report, says that Sylte died as "the result of suicide by a gunshot wound to the head."

The shooting remains under investigation by the state's Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.  Once the case is complete, their findings will go to the Wabasha County Attorney's Office.

Investigators said Schneider was shot in the head and neck, and  is in critical condition at Saint Marys Hospital.  He is said to be responding, including squeezing his wife's hand. Schneider is married, has three school aged kids and is a 9-year veteran of the Lake City Police Department.

The neighborhood near the scene was evacuated, while crews tried to make contact with the suspect inside the home.

The Lake City Police Department identified him as 25-year-old Alan J. Sylte Jr. of Hager City, Wisconsin.

SWAT teams entered the home on Lyon Avenue late Monday afternoon, where they found Sylte dead. It's unclear how he died. The medical examiner was been called to the scene.

Several schools including St. John's Evangelical Lutheran School, Lincoln High, middle schools and Bluff View Elementary were locked down most of the day. Around 7 p.m. Monday, parents were able to pick up their children.

Officers and deputies from all over southeastern Minnesota were on the scene, including Lake City, Goodhue and Wabasha counties, SWAT Teams from Olmsted and Wabasha counties and the Minnesota State Patrol.

Investigators think Sylte is armed with a small caliber handgun.  He is described as 5'11", 195 pounds with blue eyes and short blonde hair.  He was last seen wearing a short sleeved, light colored shirt. 

Sylte is considered armed and dangerous and should not be approached by the public.

Crews say they believe Sylte is still in the home on Lyon Avenue, but they have not been able to make contact with him yet.  If you see him, please call 911 immediately.

Lake City, MN (WXOW) - Authorities say a police officer has been shot in the southeastern Minnesota community of Lake City.

The Post-Bulletin reports the shooting took place about 8:40 a.m. Monday at a house near Highway 63. Sheriff's officials tell the newspaper that SWAT teams have assembled at the home after the officer was shot. There's no immediate word on the officer's condition.

Schools in Lake City have been locked down. Superintendent Craig Junker tells The Associated Press that includes Lincoln High and Middle schools and Bluff View Elementary. Junker says doors to the buildings and classroom doors are locked, shades are drawn and students have been instructed to stay away from the windows. The district includes about 1,200 students.
