Winter Safety: Driving Tips

Posted:

LA CROSSE,Wisconsin (WXOW)--If you're on the road when it snows, safety comes first. As we've seen today, accidents can happen anyway.

Since 6 a.m. Thursday, La Crosse County Emergency Services has reported 20 slide-offs, and 15 collisions resulting in four minor injuries.

Keith Butler, Emergency Management Coordinator, said people need to drive a good 10 to 15 miles under the posted speed limit, never try to pass a snow plow and above all--use common sense.

"Probably the danger zone is trying to get around a plow. They can't see you--you can't see them, you don't know how far out those wings are extending from that device, that truck because of all the snow that's flying in the air. It's just not worth it, stay behind stay a long distance behind,"said Butler.

Cars must stay at least 75 feet behind a snow plow.  However, Butler would recommend staying at least 200 feet or five car lengths behind the plows.
