Sub-Zero Weather: Protect Your Plumbing

Posted:

WEST SALEM,WI (WXOW)--Temperatures dropping below zero can create a number of concerns for home owners. One of those concerns is frozen pipes.

Pipes can freeze any time after the outside temperature falls to 20 degrees or below. That is unless your pipes are properly insulated.

Able Plumbing, a family owned business, has been licensed for more than 30 years. It's unique because two sisters are working together in a trade usually thought of as a man's world.

Colette Brookes, a licensed plumber for more than 10 years said when the weather gets sub-zero it's good business for plumbers. While Colette enjoys the business--she realizes the mess and stress that bursting pipes can cause is bad news for homeowners.

That's why she advises insulating all your pipes--whether it's with pipe heating tape or, by installing pipe heating cords--something is better than nothing.

She also said it's a myth that you should keep your faucets dripping to avoid freezing. That can actually cause your pipes to freeze and burst.
