Sparta Area School District referendum informational meeting

Sparta, WI (WXOW) - Voters in Sparta will decide a referendum next month.  At an informational session, the public learned that the issue is whether the school district can raise extra money for community learning programs and building projects.

The referendum would not add to the property tax bill for homeowners. It would basically replace a previous referendum that is expiring this year.

The district will ask taxpayers to allow it to exceed state imposed revenue caps by $750,000 for each of the next three years, for a total of 2.25 million dollars.

The superintendent says the money would go towards building improvements, after school programs, and classroom technology.

If passed, students could see upgrades in the classroom such as new computers as well as I-pads and personal computing devices.

The superintendent also says the community learning centers would receive much needed funds as their grant money runs out.

The district is trying to inform as much of the public as possible about the benefits of the referendum.

"We're very confident that if people understand the referendum, and they understand the impact of the referendum, that they would be supportive. The Sparta community has always been very supportive of education and I'm confident that they will continue to do that," said Superintendent John Hendricks.

The referendum vote will take place on February 21, 2012.
