Village of Bangor discusses Post Office dilemma

Posted:

Bangor, WI (WXOW) - A special meeting in Bangor Monday night to discuss temporary and permanent locations for post office boxes.

Bangor's post office closed two weeks ago because of water damage which led to mold in the building.

Most Bangor residents still receive home mail delivery, but it is an inconvenience for those who have P.O. boxes. Those boxes are now located at the nearest post office in West Salem.

The Village of Bangor Council discussed the importance of keeping a post office in Bangor.

The council decided to declare the need for temporary boxes to the U.S. Postal Service, until a decision is made regarding a permanent location.

Bangor Village President Greg Peterson said that a post office representative has seen the nearest possible location, which is an old creamery, and said that it would work for the temporary boxes.

"The old creamery, I talked to the guy that owns it, and he's willing to give it to them to use. It's got enough room in it. Like I said earlier in the meeting, it's three blocks further for some people to walk to the post office and three blocks closer for the others. I think that should work out good," said Peterson.

As for the permanent post office location, the Council learned that the landlord is willing to fix the mold problem if the U.S. Postal Service would sign a five year lease.

They decided to request the Postal Service to sign such a lease, with a six-month termination clause, in case the repairs are not made.
