Wisconsin School Districts Recognize 'Digital Day'

Posted:

SPARTA,WI(WXOW)--Governor Scott Walker issued a proclamation declaring February 1, 2012--Digital Learning Day.

It's designed to educate teachers, students, parents, and policymakers about options to use digital technology to improve learning.

Maplewood Elementary in Sparta is just one school recognizing the day. Teachers there use everything from SmartBoards and iPads to computers and visualizers for every subject they teach.

The SmartBoard allows teachers to break down sentences and words as the students learn to read.

Second grade teacher, Mrs. Kunes said the smart board has such vivid colors and pictures that it actually keeps the young students attention very well. She said technology couldn't be more important when it comes to learning.

"We use it in everything we do. From science to social studies, for kids who have trouble writing, from large groups to small groups so it's just very feasible to work with any size group and there's so much out there, so much available to incorporate into our classrooms," said Kunes.

Mrs. Kunes has been working with the smartboard for three years now and says it's a convenient and easy way to plan lessons.

Every teacher at Maplewood elementary has a smartboard in their classroom.

Along with the Sparta School District and districts across the state--the La Crosse School District observed digital day as well. Digital town hall meetings at the state and national levels were held as well to share ideas for incorporating technology into classrooms across the state and the nation.
