Lessons Learned in UW-L Fire

Posted:

La Crosse, WI (WXOW)-- UW-L students continued to move out of Drake Hall today after the dorm was damaged by a basement fire almost one week ago.

Drake Hall residents learned they wouldn't be able to return to their rooms earlier this week. New housing assignments were handed out Thursday.

The university is supplying boxes for the move as well as laundry cards so students can wash any clothes that smell like smoke.

UW-L Chancellor Joe Gow says the school had no detailed plan in place for handling a situation like this, but when things settle down the school plans to share what it's learned with other universities.

"Once we are through these challenges, we would be very eager to share what we've learned with other universities and colleges, because we didn't foresee a situation like this and I suspect neither do other institutions. And we've learned from it."

Students will continue moving out of Drake tomorrow and next weekend. The La Crosse Fire Department is still investigating the cause of that basement fire
