Fond du Lac officer accused of OWI, hit-and-run

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (AP) -- An off-duty Fond du Lac police officer has been arrested on tentative charges of drunken driving and hit-and-run.

Police Capt. Steve Klein says the officer was driving his personal vehicle Friday about 2 a.m. when he crashed into a parked vehicle.

The officer allegedly left the scene. A neighbor who witnessed the crash called 911.

An on-duty officer pulled over the man's vehicle, which had front-end damage and a defective headlight.

Klein says the on-duty officer called a supervisor, who responded and requested assistance from the Fond du Lac County sheriff's office.

Klein tells The Reporter of Fond du Lac, the police department has started an internal investigation.

The off-duty officer is a 12-year veteran of the police force. He's on paid administrative leave while the investigation is pending.
