Fitzgerald Campaigns in La Crosse

Posted:

La Crosse, WI (WXOW)-- Assembly speaker Jeff Fitzgerald made a campaign stop in La Crosse Saturday. Fitzgerald is a Republican candidate for the US senate seat held by retiring Democrat Sen. Herb Kohl.

Fitzgerald met with supporters at the Republican headquarters and talked about what his priorities would be if they send him to Washington. If elected, Fitzgerald says he would focus on entitlement reform and creating a balanced budget amendment.

But  Fitzgerald adds, because of the political atmosphere in Wisconsin he doesn't think the US senate race has drawn much attention.

"I think right now, an open senate seat which is normally something that's on everybody's mind and a big deal, is definitely taking a backseat right now, to the recall of the governor and the four state senators," Fitzgerald said. "You know, I'm out there running for senate, delivering my message but being speaker of the house, a lot of people want to talk about the recalls and I think it's very important."

Fitzgerald is one of three republicans running for that senate seat. Former governor Tommy Thompson and former US representative Mark Neumann have also thrown their hats in the ring.

US Representative Tammy Baldwin is currently the only democrat in the race.

She's been endorsed by Senator Kohl.
