ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC)-- Thousands followed his story as Officer Shawn Schneider gave his life in the line of duty.
Officer Shawn Schneider died several days after he was shot while responding to a domestic violence call last December.
Saturday the community came together to keep his memory alive with a benefit at the Mayo Civic Center.
More than a dozen top bands from around Minnesota are donating their time and talents to help raise money for the Schneider family. Among them was former U.S. Representative Tim Penny's band-The Pumper, the Peddler and the Politician.
Penny states, "I mean how can you say no when this goes to benefit the family and you know that tragedy is just so God-awful I think lots of people in town want to give whatever they can to help"
The atmosphere at the Mayo Civic Center was bittersweet as stories were shared.
Today's event is intended for all ages and will be running throughout the night. _explains, "The Schneider family comes in groups of all ages so you have people here for everybody in the family."
There is no charge attend, but they are asking for a "thoughtful donation" at the door.
Organizers say they are expecting hundreds of people to trickle in throughout the day.
From those I talked to --whether they knew Shawn personally or not they were there for support.
Melissa Stolp says, "My husband is in law enforcement and we need to be there to support the people who are there to protect and serve us."
Penny explains, "I know them the way most people do because of the tragedy and like most Minnesotan's I just want to do anything to help."
All proceeds go to Shawn's wife, Brittany and their three young children.
