Obama takes tougher stance on higher education

WASHINGTON (WKOW) -- The Obama administration wants to slightly reduce federal aid for institutions that don't control tuition costs.

A driving force in federal higher education policy for decades has been access to college. But the Obama administration's push for a shift in the agenda brings up a new topic of debate: Are students getting the most out of their money?

The average college graduate has more than $25,000 worth of debt. The federal government contributes $140 billion in federal grants and loans every year. Unemployment is still high, but there are projected shortages in multiple industries. Some high-tech companies are complaining about a lack of trained workers.

The president has also proposed an $8 billion program to train community college students for high-growth industries. It would also provide financial incentives to programs that make sure trainees find work.
