Sparta Referendum on the Ballot

Posted:

Sparta, WI (WXOW)-- On Tuesday, a referendum that would provide $750,000 to Sparta schools over the next three years, will be on the ballot for Sparta residents.

The money would help finance learning centers that provide homework assistance and tutoring to low income students. The referendum would also used to finance technology upgrades and maintenance issues.

Kent Ellickson, director of business services for the Sparta Area School District, says the referendum would be a continuation of  the current five-year referendum, and it wouldn't necessarily mean a tax increase.

Ellickson says the referendum is important for the success of Sparta students.

"The continuation of these programs because they are servicing quite a few of our more disadvantaged students. And they are helping to provide a little bit more structure and support for them as far as homework completing and being successful."

The Sparta school district lost about $1.3 million in state funding last year, but Ellickson says they would have asked for this referendum regardless.
