Voter turnout in La Crosse above average

La Crosse, WI (WXOW) - Voter turnout for Tuesday Primary in La Crosse was above average.

La Crosse County Clerk Ginny Dankmeyer says voter turnout was at 11%.

She says the higher turnout is due partially because not every district had an election, and there were a little more than 7,000 people who could vote.

Local election officials say Wisconsin's first elections requiring voters to show photo identification went off smoothly.

Republicans who control the Legislature passed a law last year requiring voters to show photo identification at the polls. Fourteen other states have similar requirements.

About 525 municipalities as well as a number of counties held primary elections Tuesday. Clerks in La Crosse, Green Bay and Sheboygan say people generally showed up at the polls Tuesday with their ID cards in hand.

The clerks say they a bigger problem was redirecting people to new polling places after local redistricting changes. But they say poll workers were generally able to point people in the right direction.
