LA CROSSE, WI (WXOW)—La Crosse Police said 20-year-old Sara Hougom was killed in the shooting on the 700 block of Division Street on Monday.
Hougom graduated from West Salem High School in 2009. Mike Mallot, West Salem High School Associate Principal said Hougom was involved in a number of extra curricular activities including dance team, homecoming and pep club.
"Sara was the type of person that the minute she walked into the room she brought energy, enthusiasm," Mallot said. "She was always smiling, almost always in an energetic-enthusiastic mood. She was the kid that most people just really enjoyed being around. She was a really, really fun student."
Hougom was also a server at Manny's Mexican Cocina in Onalaska for a couple of years. Lynnae Rivera, Manny's Co-Owner said Hougom was a hardworking, nice, fun loving girl who worked well with others.
Ellen Rasmussen, Wesley United Methodist Church Pastor said she worked with Hougom last summer planting flowers in the church's yard.
"I found her to be an incredibly delightful young woman both inside and out," Rev. Rasmussen said. "We are grieving her loss. The loss of her smile, her potential that she would bring. It is gone and we grieve with her family and the community."
Wesley United Methodist Church is holding a candlelight service for Hougom on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
Rev. Rasmussen said the entire community is welcome to attend Wednesday's service.
