Viroqua, WI (WXOW)—Lars is a 2-year old German Sheppard, and the newest Vernon County Sheriff's Deputy.
"Right out of the gate, Larz started to show some really good promise," said Sheriff John Spears. "They made several arrests right away on traffic stops."
Brian James has been working with Larz since November, and the dog lives with Brian.
"He gets me up at 6 am to eat, on my days off," Brian said. "Whatever I'm doing that day, he goes with me."
Larz and Brian began patrolling together in February.
"He's helped me so far, locate narcotics in vehicles," Brian said. "I mean, that's one of the jobs he's done. He's done a couple building searches with me as well."
The duo has been so successful, the county raised enough money for another K-9, Myk.
"When there was an opportunity to work with the dog, I thought it would be a great opportunity to give back to the community," said Adam Malin, who will work with Myk. "And to see what Larz has done so far, has been awesome."
And even though Larz can find drugs and even take down a suspect, when he's off duty he's just like most other dogs.
"He's pretty good with kids," Brian said. "We've done a couple school demos and he likes his attention I think."
Though it's a full time job, Brian says he wouldn't trade his new partner for anything.
"This is like the best partner you could have," Brian said. "I mean, he's always there for you. You know he is."
