New study sheds light on saving cardiac arrest patients

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -- A new study could shed light on how to save lives of cardiac arrest patients in hospitals.

According to a study by Mayo Clinic, cooling the body or therapeutic hypothermia has reduced in-hospital deaths among sudden cardiac arrest patients by nearly 12 percent.

The study was conducted between 2001 and 2009.

The goal of therapeutic cooling is to slow the body's metabolism and preventing brain damage or death.  It is believed that mild therapeutic hypothermia suppresses harmful chemical reactions in the brain and preserves cells.
