GOP hoping cross over voting affect recalls

Republicans hope their supporters vote for fake Democrats in May 8 recall elections.

That could result in GOP backers having an influence in whom Gov. Scott Walker faces in the June 5 election.

Wisconsin's open primary allows voters to cast ballots for either side, Republican or Democrat, no matter their true feelings. That inevitably leads to speculation that one side or the other will try to vote for the opposing candidate they view as the weakest, although it's rarely successful.

Republican Senate Leader Scott Fitzgerald has said he hopes Republicans cross over and vote for Democrat Kathleen Falk in the governor's race. State Rep. Robin Vos says he is also encouraging Republicans to do it.

Democratic Party spokesman Graeme Zielinski says he doesn't think it will have an effect.
