STEVENS POINT, Wisconsin (WXOW) - The WIAA on Tuesday split the venues for the boys and girls basketball tournaments.
At a meeting in Stevens Point, the WIAA Board of Directors approved a recommendation that would move the Girls State Tournament to the Resch Center in Green Bay for the 2013 and 2014 seasons. The move would be re-examined following the 2014 tournaments.
In the case of the Boys Tournament, the WIAA agreed to keep the games at the Kohl Center through the 2020 season.
"It's never been a process of falling out of love or dishonesty. It's been a pretty simple and honest conflict of facilities," said WIAA Executive Director Dave Anderson.
"This has been ever-changing. It's probably been the most changing of conversations we've had from meeting to meeting," said WIAA Associate Director Deb Hauser.
Also, the boys tournament will be held in Madison during the second weekend in March the next two years with the girls going the third weekend in Green Bay.
The WIAA and UW-Madison have had several months of discussion over the future scheduling conflicts at the Kohl Center. The WIAA announced a deal with the Resch Center in February moving the games there if no agreement could be reached with the university.
The boys tournament has spent 92 years in Madison, while the girls tournament has its beginnings in Madison since its creation in 1976.
