Rate of divorce among baby boomers is high

Undated (WXOW) - Divorce rates around the country are on the decline, but for one group it's just the opposite.


New research using data from the Census Bureau finds, one in four people getting a divorce these days are age 50 and up.  That's more than double the divorce rate among that same age group just 20 years ago.  


The study's authors point to several reasons why so many baby boomers are getting divorces.  

Women are more financially independent than they've been in the past and there's less social pressure to stay married.  Plus, the definition of marriage has evolved since their parents' generation to a greater focus on individual happiness rather than fulfilling marital roles.
