Viterbo splits, UW-L sweeps

LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) - Sunday saw a mixed day for two college baseball teams with vastly different seasons.

At 9 and 30, Viterbo baseball wasn't turning any heads, nor were they vying for postseason glory. Their nonconference doubleheader with UW-Stout was merely for pride.

After falling 7-4 in game one, the V-Hawks led game two 2-0 in the 3rd inning. With two runners on, Blake Sheppard added to Viterbo's lead with a towering 3-run home run to left, putting Viterbo up 5-0.

Stout would put up six runs of their own in the game, but Viterbo added three more to win game two 8-6, splitting the Sunday twinbill with the Blue Devils.

UW-La Crosse, on the other hand, continued to roll in WIAC play. The Eagles completed a weekend sweep of UW-Superior winning 10-4 and 8-1 over the Yellowjackets on Sunday afternoon. They improved to 18-2 in conference and with 27 wins overall, tied the school record for most in a season set back in 2000.

Only two wins separates UW-L from the number one seed in the WIAC tournament. They'll play a four-game weekend series to wrap-up the regular season at UW-Stout starting Saturday afternoon.
