LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) - La Crosse Police urge the public to use caution following a black bear sighting by the La Crosse River Marsh Friday morning.

A caller to police said the bear was near River Valley Drive and Gillette St.

Officers searched the area, but didn't spot the bear.  Police report the bear was not a threat to public safety.

Police do offer the following tips from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources on living with bears in Wisconsin:

-Do not harass a bear by following or congregating around it.

-If you observe a bear, stay in your vehicle or building until the bear wanders off.

-Never feed a bear.

-Keep your garbage cans tightly closed and indoors if possible.

-Make bird feeders inaccessible to the bears.
